Field Full of Geese

A flock of geese landed in the pasture the other day and as I look at the photo I’m reminded of how well they take care of each other. Humanity could learn a thing or two from them. Like all of God’s creation, they are formed with love, compassion, and a tenacity to survive.

When they land some eat and some guard. Then they switch roles so that all get a chance to have nourishment. In their V formation flight pattern the older ones are placed where the air current can carry them so they do not struggle to keep up with the younger. When they land as they migrate if one is too weak to keep flying after eating, another is assigned to stay with it for safety, then they catch up with the flock later. As well, if eggs are laid both mom and dad stay to protect and raise the babies until they are ready to fly. Even animals know instinctively to help each other and take care of the elderly and babies.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.” —Psalm 19:1

The next time you see a field full of geese remember the lessons they teach; compassion, love, helping each other… Pay it forward. Seek the hand of our Father in all of Holy creation.
