“Do not be conformed to this world, but be Transformed by the Renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2 (ESV)

Words I’ve heard this month: I’m bored; What are we going to do; I’m tired of being at home, I’m hungry, Wish we could go the mall, Can’t wait to get back to the “norm”! While these are all just random comments made innocently in passing with no real negative connotations why do they sound empty? Perhaps these are really statements of unrest, unsettledness, a yearning for something other than what is currently happening all of which feed the negative patterns we hold on to for dear life = busyness for the sake of doing anything other than spend time alone or with God, fear of the unknown, eating constantly yet still hungry, unhappy but convinced being with friends will create happiness, the “norm” being a place in our minds that leads us to believe if everything is going along as it always has we will be ok. What if during this time of living outside our “norm” we embrace the concept of resetting our minds to think in the moment?

  • Bored becomes Being = no plans, no thinking about anything in particular, no entertaining game or tv, no noise. We can learn to spend time alone without distractions. Sometimes it takes practice. When we become comfortable with being with our own self, we learn to spend time with God, and to focus hearing His Word in the quiet. Be Transformed
  • Do & Tired become Rest & Relax = sometimes we just need to drag out that dusty bible and sit awhile with Jesus, spend time laying in the hammock just gazing up at Heaven, or listening to frogs on the front steps at dusk. Time to step away from the stressful areas of our lives that drag us down and take a walk or even a nap. Take inventory with God and seek how you can Renew your well being.
  • Can’t Wait becomes Contentment = no wishing for the past or the future because Maybe the “norm” was not all we made it out to be anyway. Be honest with yourself. Seek God’s advice. Re-evaluating what’s really important can lead to doing away with what doesn’t positively impact our life, family, and faith, which in turn gives us a chance to clear our heads and see His Way, His Truth, His Purpose for our lives. Replacing those negative areas holding dead space in our minds that create discontent, confusion, and exhaustion with positive words of value can give us a new perspective about ourselves and reinforce our relationship with Christ. Let’s Refresh the words we use daily so our minds stay focused on Him and the positive aspects of what is going on around us. It will ultimately lead us to a happier, healthier “norm” and Contentment within our very Spirit.
