Sitting in a church bible study many years ago as a young adult, I suddenly became very uncomfortable in the discussion when the question was posed to the group, “name your greatest lesson learned from your father as a kid”. My anxiety heightened as my mind swirled with scenarios of how to answer that question: “never trust someone who yells at you for never being perfect enough for them”, “never talk; only be seen not heard”, belt whippings hurt the heart when I tell mommy that daddy secretly tells me she doesn’t really love me”, “a lesson in pouring all the water out of new water bottles to refill them with vodka so know one knows the church choir director is an alcoholic”….. “showing horses with my dad”… Ok got it – the horses and showing that’s a great positive answer for church. I was so caught up in trying to come up with the right positive answer that all expected to hear in church that I heard no one else in the room speak.

But, I did hear God loud and clear say that our earthly parents make mistakes, especially when their children are young, BUT I AM YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN AND WALK WITH YOU DAILY AS YOUR EARTHLY FATHER. YOU ARE NOT FATHERLESS. I AM FAITHFUL. BELIEVE IT AND SHARE THIS PART OF YOUR STORY.

As I blinked “back to earth” so to speak, the whole group was looking at me awaiting my grand answer. I sat there frozen yet mulling over what to say, what God had just said to me, which path to take in my answer: the safe feel good religious answer or the Word of God. DECISION TIME! I decided right then and there to be brave and step out in faith because I felt empowered by God’s faithfulness to little ol’ me in a big scary world. I mean I had just realized that I have a loving Father in Him, really, for the first time in my life. From my courageous story a whole new experience opened up in that room with the healing power of honesty as the Holy Spirit worked miracles in all our lives. As others began to share real life stories of parental defeat and hoping not make the same mistakes with their own children there were tears of letting go of it all as we clung to each other as brothers and sisters in Christ. We joined our hands together and prayed for thanksgiving that we no longer had to live in that fear because FATHER GOD is always there for all of us. From that day many years ago until this very day, I am so at peace knowing God is faithfully my one true Father forever, which freed me from the burden I carried so long of secrets, shame, not feeling worthy enough, sadness… That freedom allows me to remember the many good times with my earthly father. I now remember him in a different, positive way and do not hold onto the negative ones. Forgiveness is Freeing. His problems were not my problems to bear and I no longer allow the enemy to drag me to that place of discontent. I am thankful for my earthly father and the good memories we shared of water skiing, camping, music, horses, and I will always be thankful for his efforts as a dad even if flawed. He was not perfect, but I survived to become a better person in Christ. My true Father is heavenly and He can change our thoughts and heart patterns within immediately when we desperately need it and want it.. I Praise Him For That! “The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who respect Him.” Psalm 103:13

Remind someone TODAY, as we celebrate this earthly Father’s Day, that our one true Father is God.

Don’t hang on to hate and imperfection. God has never failed me yet! Let’s never Forget It!

Do It Again (lyrics)
Walking around these walls
I thought by now they’d fall
But You have never failed me yet
Waiting for change to come
Knowing the battle’s won
For You have never failed me yet

Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You’ve never failed me yet

I know the night won’t last
Your Word will come to pass
My heart will sing Your praise again
Jesus You’re still enough
Keep me within Your love
My heart will sing Your praise again

Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed

Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet

I’ve seen You move, You move the mountains
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again
You made a way, where there was no way
And I believe, I’ll see You do it again

I’ll see You do it again

Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed

Your promise still stands
Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness
I’m still in Your hands
This is my confidence, You never failed me yet

And You never failed me yet
I never will forget
You never failed me yet
I never will forget
