Hosanna cried out by the crowd on Palm Sunday was a plea for God to save them. It was a feeling of a “last chance” distress call. They were feeling thankful, elated, and anxious, all wrapped up in the one King sent by God named Jesus. This was their King, finally, and with excitement shouted Hosanna, as they waved the palm branches that symbolized victory of the faithful over their enemies of the soul.
Unfortunately, they misread Jesus’ mission. This was no ordinary king. Out of their desperation to be saved, they didn’t pay attention to details. Their first sign was the donkey he rode in on instead of a finely turned out white horse with trinkets tied into the tail and ribbons braided into the mane. Jesus was plainly dressed, not in flowing clean robes of purple with gold cording, but rather rode into town covered in road dust wearing simple tunic and sandals without a golden crown encrusted with rubies. He had no entourage of servants.
When the day was said and done, they didn’t get what they expected in King Jesus. Some were confused when He didn’t raise an army to defend christians. Many recognized Him as “just Jesus from Nazareth.” Lots became angry feeling duped. Few understood.
Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem kicked off the Holy Week that led to His trial, death on a cross, and resurrection within just 7 days. And, He knew it was coming. This is what He came to do. This was His mission. This was to complete His life purpose. This is how King Jesus saved humanity.
In today’s glamorous, fast-paced world, we must pay attention to details in life, nature, signs, and the Word to understand deeper meanings. Spend some time with Jesus today asking for knowledge, understanding, and deeper faith.
Hosanna – pray save us.
