Birds Sing Not Complain

Birds singing in the crisp, cool air is such a morning blessing. Their puffs of breath signify life in the fullest, even when things do not go quite as planned. They sing because they’re happy. They sing to announce the sunrise. They sing praises to the heavens for they are alive to see another day. They sing of love and beauty and whimsy. They sing because the earth is their provision and have no need to store up for they know creation is designed to provide for all their needs. It is a beautiful sound. It is the sound of Hope, Trust, Love, Care, Happy, Vibrancy, and Song.

Do birds ever squabble, fuss, fight? Oh yes! The wrens fuss with the squirrels at the feeders. The mockingbirds chase and admonish the crows for getting too close to their nests. The hummingbirds chatter mightily over who gets the syrup to themselves. Mother birds nudge their babies from the nest for their first flight all the while chirping, coercing, encouraging, getting frustrated, but not giving in until all are safely flying through the air and singing their own song. Father birds sit close by singing their version of “let’s get this done”. Even the smallest sparrow will defend their young from a predatory bird, screaming, screeching, and head butting all the way. Their winning strategy is a process and is all in the timing with focus and agility.

What birds DO NOT do is sit among the branches of the trees complaining about the incidents that took place that day, yesterday, in the past, or even worrying over the “what if’s” of the future. They live in the moment. Then it’s done! They don’t pass blame, argue a mute point, complain about the food and other birds, shriek of unfairness day and night, nor do they give in to whining about their circumstances. Birds Sing! And so should we!

“Do everything without complaining and arguing so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God. Shine like bright lights in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation…” Philippians 2:14 (excerpts)

“On their banks the birds of the air build their nests; among the branches they sing.” Psalm 104:12 (CJB)
